Nah, that was started at Horse & Buggy by the writer Thaddeus P. Tinkelschimt after the last great coach builders were switching to cars.

I don't know if cars had been around long enough for people to develop nostalgia for them back then. Almost every development, even small ones, were seen as progress.

may I suggest the van, it has *ahem* overhead protection, for when the horrible decision to rally cross a tiller controlled 110 year old car is made.
